I remember the first time I heard Charles Tyler. My young mind was left dazed and confused. I wasn’t quite sure about what I was hearing, but my initial reaction was one of rejection. His music sounded “weird”. It didn’t swing like hard bop. It was an aural assault, and I wanted no part of it. Oh how things have changed. These days, I can’t get enough. I completely understand that jazz of this variety will not appeal to everyone. That’s a given. However, speaking to friends who are fans of avant-garde and free jazz, their appreciation of it was a gradual progression.

In 1966, Ornette Coleman and his trio went to Paris to record the soundtrack of a Belgian film titled Who’s Crazy? This short documentary shows them recording it. It’s worth the watch.
