Leo Parker – Rollin’ With Leo

Leo Parker is an obscure name for most jazz fans. Most people have never heard of him. The impetus for this post was a recent conversation I had on twitter about him. I was asked if I knew anyone who sounded like him, and my answer was no. Parker played the baritone saxophone. Sure, Pepper Adams and Gerry Mulligan also played the bari, but it’s not the most popular instrument. Parker had a soulful, full bodied, bluesy sound. In far contrast to the style of Mulligan, who had a cooler, laidback and more subtle playing style.
