Coltrane’s Sound

Coltrane’s Sound isn’t a popular John Coltrane album. It was released in 1964 by Atlantic records, after Coltrane had left the label for Impulse! records. The songs that comprise Coltrane’s Sound are from the 1960 recording sessions of My Favorite Things, one of Coltrane’s most popular albums.

Joining Coltrane on this album is Elvin Jones on drums, McCoy Tyner on piano, and Steve Davis on bass. With the exception of Giant Steps and My Favorite Things, most of Coltrane’s work on Atlantic is seldom celebrated. Earlier this year, I blogged about OlĂ©, another one of Coltrane’s overlooked Atlantic records albums.

Despite his short life, Coltrane had a remarkable artistic run in the last decade of his life. Creatively speaking, critics describe his Atlantic years as a transitional period. A period between the straight ahead hard bop of his Prestige years, and the more esoteric, avant-garde, spiritual leanings of his late Impulse! years. Whatever the case might be, the “transitional” years are required listening for any Coltrane fan. It’s a decent chunk of his catalog.

In the meantime, here are songs from Coltrane’s Sound. Buy it if you don’t have it.
