The eponymous debut of J.R. Monterose on Blue Note records is not a very popular album. Monterose is seldom mentioned when there are discussions of great sax players. Certainly, his relatively sparse discography is a factor, but he was a great player nonetheless. His debut album might not be in the consciousness of the casual jazz fan, but it is a cult classic.
Joining Monterose on this session is Horace Silver on piano, Philly Joe Jones on drums, Ira Sullivan on trumpet and Wilbur Ware on bass. The album is an under-appreciated masterpiece. Look for the Music Matters 45rpm version in September.
Another great Blue Note album that features J.R. Monterose is Kenny Dorham’s brilliant ‘‘Round About Midnight at the Cafe Bohemia‘.
