Paul Chambers – Bass on Top

Today is Paul Chamber’s birthday. If he was still alive, he would have been 76. Chambers is perhaps the most prolific sideman in jazz history. He was a musician’s musician. Paul was in high demand for session work as a sideman, perhaps more than anyone else in jazz history. It goes without saying, if you needed a bassist, Mr. P.C. was the man to call. No other jazz bassist has appeared on as many dates in such a short period of time. Considering he died at a mere 33, it makes his accomplishments even more impressive. Read the rest of this entry »

John Coltrane – Dakar

Dakar was not a Coltrane album originally. It was recorded in 1957 for Prestige Records and was credited to the group, collectively known as “The Prestige All Stars”. Looking to seize opportunity of Coltrane’s rising popularity, Prestige wisely re-released it under Coltrane’s name in 1963. On this technicality, this is Coltrane’s first album as a leader since it was recorded in April of 1957, six weeks before his eponymous debut.
